This course intends to provide students with insight into the different approaches to research in the learning sciences (e.g., qualitative research methods, quantitative) and their associated strengths and weaknesses (validity, reliability, generalizability). To give students an overview of often used research techniques (e.g., knowledge tests, inventories, on-line measurements, thinking aloud, eye movements, brain measurements etc.). To provide students with insights into the practical arrangement of research: how to find school, can we use control groups in real school situations? To give students a view on submitting research proposals to different bodies including NWO, the EC etc. What are the possibilities and how do the reviewing procedures work? How do I find the right partners? To give students insights into the publication of research results. How to submit a paper, what are the choices in journals, how does Web of Science work, how do reviews look like, what is the role of a cover letter etc.? To make students alert of possibilities for 'commercializing' results of experimentation. |
